My gf was talking to our neighbors upstairs about sharing internet service. They said something about internet repeaters?
Do these work well for urban environments? Every review on amazon talks about acres and campgrounds.
Any suggestions on a good one?

Not a network tech but there should be routers out there that can do that. Or you can run a long ether net cable to a switch....

yeah try out hawking technologies line of antennas that you screw on to the router. A normal router antenna is ~2dbi. A hawking tech antenna will give you 8-15dbi depending on the model.
For your setup it would probably be something like your neighbor puts a directional antenna on their router.
And you guys have a directional antenna hooked up to a wireless repeater to rebroadcast the signal

you'll need a longer internet tube

I have an apple airport and and airport express as a repeater. Apple makes the set up easier than the lynksis one I could never quite get to work right. Running a cable is still your easiest and most reliable option.

So I get buy a repeater and my neighbors put an antenna on their existing router whatever that is?
We're not heavy internet users, but do you think an upgrade is needed for the extra load?

Buy an Airport Express and you're good to go. $100.

You would need at least 3 or 4 more internets.

I presume you don't see their Wi-Fi network ID from where you live? How far are we talking? Is there another floor between you guys?
Apple uses either WDS (common standard, sucks a bit) or their own network extension (not compatible with non-Apple routers). I use the latter. Not perfect but does the job.
It would help if you could find out what router model they have.
