i dont want to become a killing machine, i just want to do some exercise and learn some basic combat and defense technic. I think the lessons of kung fu selfdefense iam about to start are just perfect for me. and the school is at 3min from my home :)

This my cus... He's a Shaolin Monk. Kung Fu has not done him bad at all ;)

I'm surprised no one mentioned karate.
Though, as an instructor I know it is less about the style and more about the artist. The more you know about a style the closer they all seem to become... after all they are about applying physics and we are all basically built the same.

Fantastic benfal!
What style is it? Kung fu is very broad as there are varied styles.
link to the school if you like! The style i did (Praying Mantis - northern seven star) for a few years is extremely effective is term of self defense. It was incredibly safe, no nonsense stuff. There are some not so good less effective kung fu styles though. I also did kick boxing for a year and enjoyed it a lot.
To those saying "they dont do kung fu in mma". I imagine they dont do kung fu or krav maga in MMA, because MMA, kick boxing etc are sports and kung fu, krav maga etc are self defense martial arts. MMA fighters don't practice permanent damage strikes, in MMA they don't allow groin kicks, eye jabs, throat strikes, fast limb breaks, eye gouging, etc etc.
Stuff like Krav Maga and Kung fu (the good kung fu styles) are incredibly good for street fighting and self defense, i think more effective than kick boxing, boxing mma etc.
I think the use of gloves in kickboxing and boxing makes them less effective styles in street fighting as you don't have gloves on in street fights, which means you have less protection when guarding and it means you might not use your hands like you could in terms of grabbing and trapping opponents strikes etc.
But regardless of comparing they are all very good and very fun! enjoy dude! :D

- thanks Hombre! :Dbenfal99
- I said kick boxing, but even though it was called a kick boxing place it was really Thai boxing. No silly kick box rules.Hombre_Lobo
- Thanks benfal! It doesn't explicit say what style or what lineage the kung fu, which is slightly discouraging, butHombre_Lobo
- The videos look ok, but hard to get a measure on them. But regardless you should go and enjoy it, see if u like it! :DHombre_Lobo

Studied Krav Maga for 2 years.
Moved on to Wing Chun 6 years ago.
All in NYC.

Kung Fu is not ceremonias or artsy when you study under the right people. Whatever you choose it depends on the teacher. Most of them run a business, collect money and could give a fuck less what you learn. Takes a long time to find whats right for your mechanics.

@dirty design
If your in NYC you might be interested in the praying mantis kung fu class near times square.
It's run by the highly respected Tony Choi.
I visited New York a few years ago and went and watch the class and met a couple of students. It's a brilliant class, very traditional, disciplined and hard hitting. You'd also find a lot of hand movements very familiar.
From what I understand about wing chun, Mantis has a bit more in the way of overall movement, more kicks etc but I know very little of wing chun. I'd love to try wing chun, looks very effective and practical.
I would love to do krav maga though! Very jealous.
- Praying Mantice is rad. They practice in the same park as us. I train wing chun for its lack of kicks. I have knee problems and prefer to keep my feet on the ground.dirtydesign

all those simulations exercise are funny because nothing would really work that well in a real situation.

Hapkido is a nice korean style:
- Dude that was ace. That guy can fucking move, loved his striking. His hand techniques looked very similar to mantis/wing chun.Hombre_Lobo
