Have any self-employed gone on "leave" when your baby was born? Is there any way to collect monies from State or Federal? I do actually have a couple w-2's this year so I think I may somehow be eligible?

Never heard of leave if you're self employed.

Varies by state, but generally I think paid maternity leave is 8 weeks from most US employers. Paternity is generally only 1 week and is unpaid. Sometimes you can qualify for Family Medical Leave (FML), but that is generally at a reduced wage. And you run the risk of losing your job if you run out of your alotted FML.
Which is fucking disgusting. Outright fucking disgusting if you think about it. Birth is a fucking beautiful thing. A mother needs far more than 8 weeks with their newborn. They shouldn't have to sacrifice the most important months of a childs life for a career AND they shouldn't have to sacrifice their careers becaues of unfair labor practices and stigmas against pregnancy and childbirth.
America you fucking disgust me sometimes.

I don't think the same labor practices that apply to larger companies apply to freelancers. So I think you can take as much ro as little time off as you need. But unless you're incorporated and structured in such a way as to have a steady payroll and admin processes I doubt you can work the system over to collect some sort of paid medical leave.
But, I could be wrong... might be worth following up with a state or local agency to get more information.

I do believe a congrats is in order, JG.
Not sure for self-employed folks. But you may want to look into short-term disability. My job offers 3 moths maternity leave, then you switch to a 3 month short-term disability leave for a total 6 month leave. The dads get a two week paternity leave that can be taken any time within the first year of the new addition to the family.
