Going in early March to see a Francis Bacon triptych but staying a few days. Any good suggestions as far as galleries, good restaurants and some natural landmarks from those of you that live there or have been, recently? Thanks...

I'll tell you one thing, don't drive to the coast. It'll basically eat up a whole day... unless that's what you're into.

I actually meant to ask if we should rent a car...Ive been told both yes and no...assuming Ill need a car to visit nature, hiking, etc
- bored2death0
Oh, yeah. I would definitely rent a car.

also if you're after voodoo donuts go to the one on NE Davis St you wont have to stand in a line like a goon for ages like the one downtown.

lots of good art shows happening in march. most opening first thursday (march 6th) in the pearl dist. this one will be best:
http://cal.pnca.edu/e/1031for a more portland vibe, see see motorcycles has a show that opens on the 7th.

i walk by voodoo donuts downtown most mornings on route to work. weekdays there is hardly a line + you can grab a coffee at stumptown 1 block over.
i went to see the bacon painting on a weekday as well and was the only one looking at it for a good 10 minutes before some old lady joined me. again, i'm sure it busier on the weekend and especially since it will be coming down soon.

driving the columbia gorge up to hood river is close by and a good use of a day imo. pick a few waterfalls to stop at and maybe the bonneville dam & hatchery and the vista house. amazing views if have the time to get out of the city.

Portland has an endless supply of meth, speed and heroin.

If you want a quick out of the city/ taste of the natural Portland area, head down 84 to Multnomah falls. Easy hike, epic falls. Eagle creek is a couple exits past that with a really cool hike down a path partially blasted out of a cliff face with some cool waterfalls. Both >45 mins from downtown. That's the tip of the iceberg but good for a quick tourist visit.
After that go to Bonneville hot springs for a soak.
If you're downtown around lunch time hit up the food pods on 11th & Alder for some really good, cheap, fast food. Eat This is my favorite.
If you're going to hit up Pok Pok or any of those trendy spots be prepared to wait... killer wings though.
Strip clubs are always recommended around here if that's your thing. Nominal or no cover, reasonably priced drinks, no lap dance harassment, sexy tattooed women. Devils Point is the most chill in my opinion.

alright well, here's some fun things:
not sure if the http://thebelmontgoats.org/ will be moved out to lents / i-205 by then , but there's a lot down the street from me where a herd of goats has been residing for a year and it's a really rad thing to go and play with them. there's also a super friendly chicken.
in less "portlandia" vibes, powell's books is a must. it's the largest independent book store in the west coast (possibly us?) and is worth a venture through.
if you're into records at all there's tons of stores, but i won't break down what is worth what just yet.
if you're up late and stoned, devils dill (www.devilsdill.com) is 5pm-3am late night amazing sandwich delivery; always good if you're partying and need to prevent a hangover.
if you have a car and some time, head east on 84 for about 45 minutes to scope multnomah falls. there's also some good scenic spots along the way of the columbia river.
first thursday, as mentioned above, is good for an art walk but i don't know if it's running / popular right now (winter means it'll likely be wet out). but that whole downtown area does have more than a couple galleries, however the quality of art is hit or miss.
ground kontrol, on couch (pronounched "cooch") and fifth is a bar+arcade+showspace; across the street is upper playground with the 50/24 gallery (SF based, but this one is the PDX branch). some decent eats around that spot.
that's all i can think of for now. i've yet to go see that bacon but it's probably worth the trip.
- I live a block away from Devil's Dill. Good stuff. Oh, and LARDO. Definitely LARDO.Douglas

I was there visiting some friends for a few days back in October.
Pok Pok was good, but I wouldn't sweat it if you miss it.
Voodoo donuts was a bit of a disappointment. The flavors are crazy, but the actual quality of the donuts wasn't anything special.
Multnomah Falls is a must-see.
When I was there they had a cool little market near downtown on the weekend where you could buy some food and local art.

If you are a beer drinker...
Hair of the Dog (strong ales, excellent food)
Cascade (excellent sours)
Gigantic (small + indie)
Laurelwood (i havn't been, but like their beer)
Deschutes (big brew pub experience in the pearl)
Rogue (not a fan, but a good tourist stop)
Double Mountain (if you make it up to Hood River on your 84 drive)Others which i'm sure have onsite tasting rooms... Breakside, Ninkasi...
Good beer bars: Green Dragon, Apex, Belmont Station
