"Need to have" = Buy it immediately.
"Nice to have" = Wait.

Wait a few years, I hear they have something pretty cool in the works.

Im still using my 2007 model. If it works it's good enough for me. I do have some issues with it but nothing critical. It still functions.
- You running any CS software?citizen_h
- CS4 I believe. Yeah Im behind, whatever. Still works find. Upgraded the RAM though.CygnusZero4

Good time to buy a refurb.
Just stuck 16gb ram in my 17" MBP (2011) for under $200 and it's zooming. Apple will tell you 8gb is the limit but 16 is fine.

from your 2011 model lots of the new ones are a good upgrade, i also need a new mbp.. im using the original version from 2005 with original OS 80gig hard drive.. for me an upgrade would be light years ahead.

And then there is this asshole who returned it, because he was unable to hold it with a cup of starbucks coffee in one hand.
- ehh, why is he an asshole? I moved from a 15" to 13" with my last purchase and would never go back.Josev
- I prefer the size of the smaller machine. I run a 24" monitor off of it for designing, so screen size is not an issue.Josev
- because of this stupid justifice.. "I need to hold my laptop togehter with a starbucks coffee in one hand or its crap" thats whymekk

The answer to OP's question is: Don't buy one, you don't really need it.

according to http://buyersguide.macrumors.com…
it looks like you should wait a bit

of all laptops with 512GB SSD Macs are the cheapest

I'm using a 2007 Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo. Upgraded to 6GB RAM.
Still using the original hard drive!
I do have a few external drives for backing up and storage of files, of course. But the internal drive has held up for 7 years! At one point I put a hybrid drive in it, but it started on fire. I had to replace a cable that burned, then I just put the old drive back in. No problems at all.
I've been using this computer every day since it was new and I run CS5 (mostly PS/AI/ID/DW), Lightroom 4 and occasionally FCP7. Since installing mavericks, it's quite slow for boot up and shut down, but while I'm working it is fine.
Going to pick up an SSD today or tomorrow and I'm hoping that gets me back up to fast speeds.
- Those are capable of running Mavericks but tend to just die when least expected.raf
- I had the experience RAF described. My 2007 MBP just powered down one day like I had shut it down. The motherboard failed and it was too expensive to repair ($1100)Josev

nb damn! i should give it a little boost as well. had been thinking of getting the new one in june.
2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
4 GB 1067 MHzThings are a little slow... running ID, PS, and AI all at once...
i've had my macbook since 2009
can't believe it's still ticking.

So retina Macbook Air is coming soon?
- Who knows but would make senseprophetone
- do professionals use MB Air?ohhhhhsnap
- not reallyprophetone
- Unlikely. The thing about retina is that it needs a good video card to run, and they aren't cheap.nb
- Apple only recently upgraded the rMBP 13" to have a proper video card to handle the screens.nb
- Seems like a retina MBA would push the cost up pretty high.nb

How is a 4K screen going to be any different from Retina on a 15" display where you can't really spot a single pixel already?
I would go and get a souped-up refurb with all the RAM and processor you can get and no less than 512GB SSD.
In two years, when you feel you need to upgrade, you'll still sell it for more than half of what you had paid for it.
- I highly doubt they'd put out a 4K laptop this year. Makes no sense.nb
- prophetone0
well this is the thing, even if you spill a slurpee on it and fry it, people will but it off you for $1k in two years
- mekk0
Retina display sucks for web design and retouching, shit is all to clear. You'll need to plug a lowres monitor in for detail work.
- autoflavour0
I buy laptops when the old one dies
unfortunately i usually only get 4 years on average..
- tank020
@mekk:
That is the weirdest statement ever. I'm an interior photographer, its awesome for retouching because it gives a good reflection how its going to be print. Hell its even better than print.- That threw me off too.CyBrainX
- If you're printing, retina is great. If you're doing work that will mostly appear on non-retina displays, you need a non-retina display to checknb
- Adobe has still not updated Acrobat Pro for Retina, so your print previews are blurry too.mekk
- But can't you just adjust the resolution in Settings when you do your print work?CyBrainX

I'm torn between a 13" Mpb and 13" mba. If only they would make a retina MBA then I'd be sorted! :D
Any advice?
Performance between the two these days is actually not that much. It is a consideration if you are doing video or 3d, that utilises the gpu of the Mbp though.
Mbp 200g ish heavier, Mbp Retina screen is nice, but can fit less on it (1280x800 vs 1440x 900).
Mbp has a Better ips display, Mbp can power 2 external monitors.
MBA has a nicer form factor, but not black screen bezel.
Tough call!

Also I've heard a lot of people say the retina makes most web browsing experiences look like crap as a 90% of sites don't yet use high res images.
Is this true? Shame if so because the screen is ace. Anyone had similar experiences?
- it's fine, yes but no bigs. for instance QBN is 90's css sharpness but that logo is 211x61, fuzzy but life goes onprophetone
