Anyone ever worry about Malware? I was doing image research for a project and wound up on some iffy sites and my computer just turned off yesterday with no warning.
Are there any good scanners for Macs? Is that something people do?

Before your computer turned off, did it have 0% battery left? ;)
Seriously though, according to Apple as long as you update your OS regularly with their security updates you're supposed to be fine.
Disabling or uninstalling Java should help also though just to be sure.

Btw, if you do have Java installed and want to keep it then put the security level to high (in system pref) and then I think it will alert you and ask for permission before use on any sites you've not already allowed.
And finally, DEFINITELY get yourself a copy of Little Snitch.

Its around £30 and its a must have. It shows all connections in and out of your computer over the internet. Props you when Software and connections are requesting access to your computer or to the internet and allow you to block anything that seems dodgy. Basically management for anything you could possibly be worried about.

Get rid of Java, avoid dodgy font sites.
Last time I had a machine get whacked was a supposedly up to date XP laptop, a few years back, after someone thoughtfully shared a link to a dodgy site either here on on anotehr forum. Just watched it implode in front of me, as I tried desperately to pull the battery and power out... too late.
But yes, exercise caution on teh internets.

Not really on Macs, if you disable Java and manually install Flash updates you should be fine.
Malware is so rare on Macs that if there is one going round it's well publicised to spot it when it tries to get you.

Windows is a different story, you have to be really fucking careful. Every time I meet someone with a Windows laptop it's always caked in malware shit.

both times I've had major malware problems it was through downloading fonts / vectors from dodgy sites - rather than porn activity. Serves me right I guess.

If you just can't stop yourself from visiting the filthier corners of the internet, get yourself a sandbox.
http://www.sandboxie.com/ is good.

I've been using Hands Off! on Mavericks instead of Little Snitch and it's basically the same thing, in case you were looking for an alternative.
