both airlines are fine. vueling might have slightly nicer interiors. i've done the barcelona > rome flights. it's less than 2 hours flight. not something to overthink. you could literally take a shit in the bathroom and be in Venice by the time you're done wiping your hairy ass. Just book a ticket and show up at the airport and you'll be fine.

i like vueling because they have better branding and nicer-looking stewardesses.

Ryanair are cheap (watch out for hidden costs) and unpleasant in all regards.

hm.. so the same flight from vueling is sold by iberia and british airlines for an extra 50e

If you have a couple of days, drive it.
I've driven Barcelona to Verona and that journey – Perpignan, Marseilles, Provence, Cannes, San Remo, Genoa, Milan if you fancy – it's a winner. MrsT and I did it in 3-4 days which was pretty lazy. About 12hrs driving all up I think.
