my 6 year old has been great with my ps3 and now ps4 whilst he's been growing up.
he loves minecraft too and plays it constantly on the ps4, and when he goes to bed he can play it on his Vita via the link between the ps4 and the vita, which is amazing.
but realistically its down to what they want. both consoles have exclusives, ps has a stronger lineup for the future, is, as others have stated, the more powerful machine which will make a difference in the long term.
budget is also depending?
wii's are cheaper but dont have minecraft i dont think? i may be wrong.

I would get an X1 over the PS4. Look at the game list, the PS4 basically has nothing going on until holiday 2015, but the X1 has quite a bit going on this holiday and beyond. All multiplatform games are basically the same on both, and sales do not matter.
The X1 is selling faster than the PS3 and 360, and the PS4 sold more because it was cheaper which isnt the case anymore. PS4 is good if you like sales, the X1 is good if you like games. Check the game lists on wikipedia.

For kids you could go with the Wii U, problem is it only gets like 5 games a year because noone outside of nintendo is making games for it. So the kids will probably get bored pretty fast. I have a U, its worthless.
