If you're using stuff line Node.JS, Rails, Django, digital ocean is sooo nice.

I use Tsohost. They have a free customer helpline, they're helpful and nice. I've had to deal way too many times with bad hosting companies who have hidden costs with premium helplines, so i always tell my clients where possible to use these guys.
If anything avoid 123-reg like the plague, awful service.

Fatcow is cheap and fine.

Probably doesn't apply to most Yankeedoodles here, but to people like Sem, or other Euros, it will — choose your host depending upon where your, or your clients', customers will be based.
Not a great idea getting a host on the West coast of the States, say, when your clients are all in Britain.
Relativity's a bitch.

Has anyone had experience of SiteGround? I've read a raft of good reviews and was thinking of using them for hosting a wordpress site.
Any thoughts?

gahhhh, i hate this. i don't see a clear choice. all i need is one wordpress site for my portfolio and ftp access to deliver files to clients. i want fast load times and good customer service. i don't need the cheapest monthly price but should be competitive. i'll take any suggestions...

Here are some examples from actual live chat convo's with Bluehost sent to my email.
1st example, site was up and running, but FTP wasn't working meaning I had to use their WP installer. I explained for ages that I needed FTP access to backup files and upload certain parts.....he tried to say it was down to the browser I was using (for FTP, yes really)
(6:7) [me] But regardless of the browser its the FTP thats not working.
(6:9) [Eldon T.] I just wanted to make sure I was testing the right IP
(6:10) [me] ok
(6:10) [Eldon T.] alright can you try it now? I resynced the password,
(6:11) [me] no change i'm afraid
(6:16) [Eldon T.] hum, alright I'm not having any luck and I'm at the end of my shift, I'm going to need to transfer you over to another tech, they will be able to see our chat so far so you won't need to repeat yourself too muchThen he actually closed the convo and vanished. Leaving me to explain it all to someone else. Then while talking to person number 2 he seemed to have sorted the FTP so I could log in, but didn't have write permissions. I was passed to person number 3.
Then, it got worse. The whole site just deleted itself while person 3 was messing with the backend.
(9:59) [me] that is ridiculous! why would it just suddenly drop like that?!
(9:59) [Tyrell T.] I'm still looking for a database to import one moment
(9:59) [Tyrell T.] do you use FTP at all?
(10:0) [me] Thats the joke, I tried but that wasn't working, so someone on here told me to use different login info which let me onto the FTP but I couldn't upload files or access new folders so I used the installer.
(10:1) [Tyrell T.] the files were deleted I am not sure how or why. my suspicion is an FTP connection was involved.
(10:2) [me] But no FTP was connected so it wasn't that.
(10:2) [me] I used the File Manager on the cPanel to try and find the MSF directory made by the installer that was all.
(10:2) [me] Because the FTP wasn't working as mentioned
(10:3) [Tyrell T.] its there now give me a moment to try and find your posts so that you don't have to recreate themIn short, after hours of annoying chat. They deleted a WP install I had customised online due to the FTP not working. They managed to find and fix the database meaning some of the content and posts were still there. But the overall changes to the theme that took a very long time were all gone.....the biggest joke? this happened TWICE!
So yeah, I have reason to dislike Bluehost.
