Need some advice. So I had 2 older cats and one younger INSANE kitten. Well I had to put one of my older cats down last sunday which completely sucked. My gf is very distraught and wants another cat.
Problem is the young one is nuts and probably needs a playmate her age, but Im worried about the old cat. My kitten already harasses him all the time.
Anyone here have experience mixing different cats that didnt grow up together? Are they all going to fight all the time? Will the little one accept the new kitten at some point and actually play with it? Will both gang up on the older slower one?

It's difficult to say as cats have almost as varied personalities as humans. Years ago I had a 3 year old male cat and got a female kitten. Brought her to the house and put her next to him on the sofa.... He took one look at her and swiped her with one blow off the sofa onto the floor.
After that he kept his distance for a few weeks and then gradually they began to accept in each other and before long they were totolly comfortable with one another.
Not sure how much that helps, probably none, but I guess you can go fuck yourself.

- that's usually how it goes down in my experience. they eventually accept defeat but never completely forgive you for replacing them with the younger modelgilgamush

Sometimes it works , sometimes it don't.
Are your older cats dominants?
What do you mean by "old"
Are they sterilized? (including the youngster)

Theres only one older cat now. So him and the little one are fixed. Hes 13 years old and still vibrant, still plays, but the little one has turned into the dominant one.
She has too much energy for him, she chases him around, he hisses, she jumps on him just trying to play and he doesnt seem too interested in playing with her.

Now the gf thinks the little one needs a playmate, and she probably does, but is that going to cause even more problems for the older one with 2 little ones tearing around all the time? Shit is a pain in the ass and not sure what to do.

i had an older cat who was awesome. roommate brings home kittens. my cat, from then on, shunned us till the day he died.

Man, cats are awesome.

If he's already used to the little one, I don't think there's going to be a major problem, older cats eventually accept the kittens easily. Problems arise more often if you try to join two adults (can be very problematic) or like scarabin, an older cat used to being alone.
Cats used to being with others will eventually adapt, but the fuckers will surely harass the shit out of your elder one.

I feel bad for the older cat being harrassed by the younger cat.
- sometimes it's great, injects lots of life in older cats.ESKEMA
- It gets him moving a little more anyway. Burning some calories.CygnusZero4

I dont know, I say hes adapted to the little one loosely. He accepts that she lives there, he will clean her here and there, they will sleep together sometimes, but she has so much energy that she annoys the shit out of him. Always chasing him and will jump on him wanting to wrestle.
With my older female cat gone now, this is why my gf thinks the little one needs a kitten around her age to play with, but I dont know how rough that will be on him. Fucking animals. Love them but man its tough to make decisions like this bc you dont know how its going to go.
- If it turns into a total nightmare what do I do? Sell the new one? lmaoCygnusZero4

Two cats isn't enough?
Get a medium aged cat to balance things out.
- She wants one for the little one to play with smhCygnusZero4
- yea, that's not how it works.sea_sea

Buy them a Netflix account or something, keep them busy.

My mother adopted a stray kitten, the cat was crazy. The cat would walk over to you, rub herself against your leg that just start attacking you viciously. Or she would run around the house like a bat out hell for no reason. One time she ran up the curtain to the ceiling and jumped into the ceiling fan. She then calmly went over to her water bowl and started to drinker water, then sat down and watched TV. The craziest shit I have ever seen an animal do.

I have a kitten. I have a feeling your phrase "INSANE kitten" is just redundant. I don't know how people have more than one cat. Mine does something I don't want her to do every seven seconds. I love her but would never take in another at any age.

Get a dog to chase the little cat. Would you guys want to be chased around and irritated all day in your home environment?

set is totally right when he says "It's difficult to say as cats have almost as varied personalities as humans."

Try to tire out the insane cat. They just have too much energy.

Yeah I try to wear her down. Have a laser pointer, she has a lot of toys and we play with her a lot, but shes a kitten, their gas tanks are never really empty. Even when shes tired, if you even just bump into a toy her head pops up like a fucking radar and she will instantly have new energy.
My gf seems to think that if she has a play friend her age that she wont bother the big older one as much, and Im not sure thats the case. I have a feeling she'll always want to bother him.

Get the extra kitten. They will play together and leave the old one alone.

cats have different personalities, getting another kitten doesn't necessarily mean the one you have will be entertained and leave the older one alone. is the kitten a boy or a girl?
i know my cats calmed down once i had them fixed. you have to do that with kittens at a pretty early age especially if they are girls before evil sets in.
- kitten is a girl, old one is maleCygnusZero4
- she is fixed btwCygnusZero4
