Is there a way to tell InDesign to ignore all orthography rules and to hyphenate words at any point, even after the first letter for example? Resulting in all lines to have almost the same number of characters...
Any help greatly appreciated!

you can tell it to hyphenate after the first letter but you can't tell it to ignore orthography. You can try with another language to see if it does better to what you want, but you always need a language, otherwise it won't hyphenate.
In case you don't know, there's an hypenation menu with lots of options in the Paragraph Styles Menu, or if not using a paragraph style, you can access it through the Paragraph window fly-out menu.
- Using Justify Left and tweaking the Justification options will also help you get there.ESKEMA

thanks – if I set language to Czech it’s indeed more the way I want to... if you were asking yourself: I am dealing with a dingbat font right now that an artist developed for a book project... all texts in the book will be in normal and "translated" to that dingbat font... and since no one can read that anyway I thought it would be neat to have all lines more or less uniform...

Turning it to single line composer will help too. A full justify will likely help as well. Set before and after to 1 or 0 right?
