be humble, you would be out in the rain humping shingles up a ladder if there weren't people that appreciate your creative vision

Tell him to just look busy.

For inspiration and reference, look at *everything* other than the work you do and learn why the world looks how it looks - it's a lot more interesting than you think.
One of the main things I tell the people I have instructed who are learning the job (arch-viz / 3D). Looking at other architectural CG work gets you nowhere - for technical problem-solving, yes, but for inspiration? Forget it. I know folk in the job who are deep into the technical side - advanced rendering, maths, all that piss and man, their images are glossy and nice but boring as shit - I don't give a fuck how you rendered the grass. Film and photography are my main go-to's for image reference - everything from Olivia Wilde fashion shoots in Harper's to stills from Escape From New York - it's all good. You may not use it directly, but it all sits in your head.

Essentially the the advice you'd give your younger self. The stuff you wish someone told you.

If the work you are being given isn't floating your creative boat, do lots of personal side projects and smallish freelance jobs where you have more control.

Find a good wife, have a lot of kids. Our culture is counting on you.

Look around you, understand why someone is the "best" in your field (and any field). Learn what make them the "best", find a "best" that inspires you, over and over, never stop looking, they are always out there, always someone much better than you are.
Then, most importantly, understand what makes them the "best", pull it apart and truly try to get inside a process and thinking. Never stop learning. The minute you stop getting inspired is the minute you should find another profession.
- I am continually surprised how many creatives have no idea who their peers are, what is "great", etc., etc.formed

In my experience if you're an avid reader/researcher, and can complete that curiosity with proper discipline/drive, an internship or assisting someone whose work you like beats any school or diploma and will get you much further by building experience and a network early on.
Do that as soon as you can, if I could do it again I'd have done that at 18.If you lack a bit on the discipline department, definitely go to school where you (at the very least) will learn to get shit done through assignments and deadlines.

Get a production job, you'll love it.

No but seriously, be picky about your first job. And try to get a job where the boss has a design background, unless you want to work for someone that only cares about pleasing the client.
- Your boss isn't as important as your coworkers. Work in a big office that will have more people to learn from.freedom

it doesn't matter what you do, but why you do them.

Get into automation.

Until your 30's, don't be afraid of going bankrupt, but after 40, do as money as you can, and avoid the bad paid projects like the plague
- you mean take wise risks, and if you go bankrupt SEE where you went wrong. ?bklyndroobeki

Working in a big office with many people is more fun.
Unless you're working with your wife or best friend, I don't know why people want to work with like one or two people.
Fuck autonomy, that shit gets boring.

Work in a place that buys you lunch or has a cafeteria. Bringing lunch from home gets boring and getting delivery is expensive.

Always wear protection.

Don't complain, burn bridges, or be stoned on the job. Be punctual and do the work.
