There are lots of badmouthing and probably many people will not like what I recommend but: 1and1 Strange but I never had the issues what you can read on forums. Contacted the support via call 3 times in the previous 5 years. (and I got a 50% discount this year for my domain renewals :)
- oh and they have real unlimited hosting not that crap what most companies advertise.sted

How much traffic is the site expecting, and what requirements do you have? As in languages, db's, etc?
If it's a personal site, or relatively low traffic site, Google App Engine is the way to go. It's absolutely free up to a certain, very generous traffic quota.
They can host PHP, Go, Java, or Python based sites right out of the box. I think node.js will be a standard option too pretty soon. If you need only HTML / Javascript, you can use the Python build, which has a very simple to use web server
-------------
The downside is that you will have to learn the App Engine way of doing things. It's not inherently difficult, but it is probably new to most people.
If you've ever used digital ocean, or any other similar host, you would pick it up pretty quick.

Linode just cut their prices and have great support. http://welcome.linode.com/featur…
I'm on DigitalOcean right now but considering moving just based on price.

I just dropped MT based on grid price hike. Was a nice $20/mo for years then it jumped + usd to cad exchange to boot. Made it a beyond mostly fun and basic needs kinda deal.
- should note if they hadn't bumped the price up by 50% i woulda stayed and paid the extra vs others b/c love the panel, good serviceprophetone

Looking for a new host since my current one seems to have forgotten about me (support ticket has been open for 12 days). I looked through the current thread and webfaction seems to be the one to go with, any other recommendations?

I have been paying $30 year with Bluehost for 6+ years with little to no problems...and unlimited everything!

any love or hate for powweb? (https://www.powweb.com/) I've used them in the past and was thinking of gravitating a client's site to it. That said, some of the alternatives above look interesting.
