Once you are president you are always referred to as president.
President Bill Clinton
President Jimmy Carter
President George Bush
etc

Appointed Vice Persident & succeeded to the presidency. More of a figure that was in the right place at the right time by being named President. Although, he seems to have done a good enough job

Wow, he played on '32 and '33 National Championship teams at Michigan. Ford turned down contract offers from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers of the National Football League following his graduation in 1935 in order to attend law school.
