Agree with ants - find a service apartment - in one of these suburbs and you'll have an awesome 3 months.
I lived there for 10 months and found a place in Bronte beach - about 10 mins drive from the city.
It depends where you are working cause it's hard to get around. But cool, hip suburbs to live include : Paddington or near "5 ways" (5 mins from the city - lots of bars and restaurants), Bondi (the famous overcrowded beach), Bronte (beach next to Bondi which is smaller and more local), Randwick (where all the students live - still close to the city).
