If you are in a position that you have to defend your creative decisions making process to other designers, I would say that you are in a serious quagmire with the overall identity concept.
In my humble opinion I mentioned that I liked the "overall mark" which included the "look and feel" however, I also strongly feel that the logo does not look refined enough and looks pedestrian and under developed as a whole. The logo almost appears to be a sketch or the beginning of a good idea, which it is...
But from the sounds of it, you and your client seem to be happy with the overall identity. More importantly I hope that your clients' potential customers and or investors buy into it 100%.
