I would think of assocaited imagry (no, not the sexual images before you say it) things like stereotypes that come to mind when you think of streight men/women and streotypes you think of for gay men and women.
For things like this a "moodboard" or whatever the in word for them is these days, can really help.
How about the obvious, such as the male and female symbols ? You know the ones with the circle and an arrow through it etc, ?
I do agree that they should probably be on seperate sites, the owner is probably worried that visitors will think that the venue is strictly one or the other, so streight visitors might think it is an all gay club and vice versa.
