Back to the kitcar comparison - you could spec the Mercedes engine, suspension, seats, etc., but it would still not be a Mercedes.
I don't think you can compare a home built computer to a factor sealed and tested version, whether it be a Dell, HP or Apple. You pay a little more, but you get compatibility and out-of-the box performance (no testing).
I think it just comes down to how much you'll pay for a higher quality chassis and body. All the components are the same, performance is the same, etc.
A better analogy:
PC (Dell, HP, etc.) = Mercedes engine and tranny, with a GM body and chassis (new Camaro is pretty nice)
Apple = Mercedes, same performance as the PC, but a better made body and chassis
The Hyundai vs. Mercedes analogy is not correct or fair. I like Apple's more, but I don't like OS X (of course, I hate Vista far more!) and I need PCs to run 3D Studio.
So I stick with the Mercedes performance in a mediocre case.
