    Classic symptom of a dying drive. Even if it is working now I would certainly replace it. In windows you can do a scan disc and see if there are any bad sectors on the drive...if it finds any windows can "fix" them. All it does is mark those sectors as bad so the OS will not attempt to access them....so it's not really fixing anything. If there are bad sectors your drive is surely going bad.

    Regardless if the 3D Studio max was littered with viruses, no virus can cause hardware damage. I would say it was pure coincidence that your drive started making noise right after you installed the pirated software.
