the "filter" is where you can search for threads. for instance if you search for "photography" you will find several photography threads that have been going on for some time. in there we discuss photography related topics.
not to say you may not start your own threads. but if oyu do start your own thread named "photography" you may want to include some photography other than your own. once again people may see this as spamming.
