Nairn, you've got to use metal for gobos. The heat generated by a 500 or 750 watt lamp is incredible. Most gobos burn out after a while as well, depending on the length of time that they're used and at what power output from the lamp.
We used to make custom gobos using old aluminium sheets from photo-litho but they're a PITA to cut w/ an xacto. You can use tin pie plates as well but generally only get about six hours at 100% from the lights.
