I taught an introduction to interactive design class at Yale last summer with Julian. Very intro. Code-wise we started with just a plain text editor and a browser to do some HTML. (Eventually up to structured logic and PHP.) Typography-wise we did readings on letterform, hierarchy, and grid—mostly Swiss and Dutch of course. History-wise we read / talked about Vannevar Bush, Engelbart, etc, and touched on some demo scene themes.

Some of the early code demos and PDFs are still on the Yale website, maybe they'd be helpful? :

Carnegie Mellon's got some great programs like Entertainment Technology Center (ETC; used to be co-run by Randy Pausch!), and Master of Tangible Interaction Design (mTID).
