I'm currently trying to eat/sleep/design/draw&paint/reco... music in 200 square feet. It took about 2 years of rearranging furniture/equipment into a living situation that works, but still drives me nuts sometimes. As soon as I can afford it, I'll be looking at a separate work studio space.
Cheaper to have an apt + work studio than an apartment of equivalent size and better to have them separate anyway, IMO.
