You on Mac? Use Quicktime Pro and TitleLab (free).
Open the .srt/.sub in TitleLab, then adjust settings for the size of the movie/font/etc. Then export to Quicktime. Open the subtitles up in Quicktime, select all in the timeline, copy. Open up the MP4 in Quicktime and select Edit > Add to Movie. I think you can fiddle around with the settings more in Movie Inspector or Movie Properties.
It's a piece of piss to do, provided I've explained myself properly.
