never used one until a friend (who is an avid cyclist) was hit from behind by a car 2 blocks from his house last year. he flew over the hood and landed 10 feet behind the car, and cracked (but did not break) a bone in his back, but his head and neck were fine, largely due to the fact that the helmet he was wearing took all the impact. (it was destroyed, if he was not wearing it, he would be dead, no question.)
You really always have to go with a helmet designed for cycling, not one for rock climbing, snow boarding, skate boarding or anything like that, these are for different types of impacts, they can not protect your head if you are hit by a truck, or fall off at 40 mph going down hill. Plus bike helmets have air vents, which trust me, are nice.
the cheaper the helmet though, the worse they look, expect to spend at least $150 for a decent one.
    these aren't so bad...

    • I have one of these.. Don't remember it being that expensive. Got it off amazonRodimus79
    • I don't use it as much as I should. The drivers around here are largely oblivious to everythingRodimus79
