its all in the interest of telling a story. Tell any of aesop's fables to a child and they can appreciate the story from a literal perspective. Read Aesop's as an adult and you will be able to read into the allegories and metaphors. Great design functions in this respect as well – through layers of understanding.
You can design something that appeals to the audience as a whole - but where the difficulty lies is making it appeal to the niché audiences as well – the historians, designers, industry people, etc... To be a great designer requires GREAT empathy.

- generally hire me as an authority figure, not a vendor, so I'm able to say things that I know he's listening too...identity
