first, what linux compatibility issues? most distros work on nearly all pc types, now.
second, what beige boxes? fuck, i haven't owned a beige pc case in 5 years.
i like both. besides, linux runs on either mac powerpc processor architectures or ibm compatible architectures...
doesn't matter to me which box i buy...
and, on a side note, hardware in pc's isn't "nickle and dime" as the ill-informed point out, the majority of it is the exact same quality as mac hardware.
a harddrive is a harddrive, whether is was made for mac or pc..
