because you might end up the wrong side and have a 30 minute... walk? wait? swim? if you were going to judge your overground journey from the tube map you'd be a fool anyway. scale is so distorted it's completely useless as a map. it's sole purpose is to help calculate your journey between stations. If removing the blue stripe in the middle makes that calculation easier then it's a good thing.
i'm upset the thames has gone only from a "nostalgic love of london" view point. but then the original tube map didn't have the thames - so we're back to the classic design that the rest of the world copied.
