I think it's a necessary evil. I can understand doing it for many reasons especially in a workplace. As long as you understand and know you're not being true I don't think that's a strike against you. I think it's the people who are fake without even realizing it that are the real problem.
If you really have issues with these people you can always risk telling them exactly how you feel about them. Of course this has it's own set of consequences, which you're probably aware of.
I think the important thing is being true to yourself which can mean, among other things, being untrue to others. Take that how you will—it is after all only an opinion.
There are really no black and white answers to questions like this and I hope you can find what it is that works best for you.
