I think the color shift you're seeing is where the feathered edge is mixing with (or screening out) the background color. I've seen this happen and cause a halo around whatever i was working with. Sometimes changing the blending mode can help. But usually it's just a nasty side effect of dealing with a feathered edge. To make it look right, you'll probably have to build the whole image (background included) in photoshop. And then place it into indesign.
