what they don't report is that 1/3 of the folks on welfare probably shouldn't be. the system is extremely easy to scam. i know assholes (i wish i had an "unknow button") who are on welfare for no other reason than a severe case of "somethin' fo' nuthin".
then there's the secondary market: selling the stamps for cash so they can buy other shit.
finally there are those who are legitimately on, but getting off is fairly "ham-handed". it's sort of like stepping off of a cliff, nothing gradual about it.
a friend of mine, a single mother, is dealing with that now. after being out of work for over a year and burning through her savings, she finally gave in and applied for food stamps. she found a job last month at about half what she was making previously. boom! no more aid, as though that first paycheck would cover everything.
my wife and i treated her to groceries and school supplies for the little one.
system restart!
