    this is just a personal experience, but what i did was packed my stuff into my car, and shipped my car on a car carrier. it was about 1k. compare it to a uhaul+gas+hotels+food, it was a third of the price, plus you can fit much more stuff in it than otherwise, because there are no people on board.

    once you have driven a packed car across the country once, you are reluctant to do it again.

    plus a warning, Portland has filled up with former Californians and New Yorkers over the years (especially Californians), forced up land prices, changed the local culture a bit, and many locals are really resentful...I have driven through Oregon with both California and New York plates...and have run into some problems....perhaps it was just bad luck though, you never know.
