PDF problem with the †

  I'm pretty sure it's an Acrobat/PDF rendering issue. I believe it's due to vector/eps objects and the amount of shape hinting that's used to render the object in a PDF format. If you need the object to render accurately in a PDF format I would suggest outlining the type/object and then exporting to PDF, although this is not always a surefire fix. Sometimes you actually have to go into illustrator and add additional points to the paths. This is pretty common with I's and l', where they dissappear completely or appear thicker than normal.
