My main problem with ripping, it when nothing is added or progressed - and the person copying the idea is doing so to make up for their own lack of talent / laziness.

However, whether we like it or not, I reckon that our notion that 'stealing / ripping is bad' .. is going to continue to change severely over the next couple of decades.

As we're exposed to more stuff - it becomes more difficult to _not_ be influenced by other people's work.

Originality has always been valued highly - but maybe being first with an idea doesn't necessarily need to hold so much value.

Why does the concept of originality hold value anyway? Perhaps it relates to our desire to be able to 'own' an idea - and be able to profit from it - through intellectual property / copyright laws?

As we start to realise that intellectual property can't be held onto easily (because DRM doesn't work, and copying doesn't cost anything), I think society will adjust - and societies' norms will change.

Maybe one of those changes will be further acceptance of ripping / borrowing / stealing ideas?
