    TONGUE EATING LOUSE
    cymothoa exigua

enters a fish through its gills, where it attaches itself to the base of the animals tongue. from this position it sinks its sharp, hollow claws into the fish, sucking its blood through them. it goes on to eat the tongue and use its own body to take its place. this is the only known case of a parasite completely replacing a host's organ.

normally found off the coast of california.
