Your company might have a cycle to work scheme which is a great way to do it - the payments come out before tax. My old agency had it set up with Evans who have loads of shops around London.
I'd stay away from second hand as it could always be nicked, plus you have no warranty and the bike is likely to be set up for someone of a different size.
