The name was probably adopted by George Washington in order honor the great navigator Americus Vespucian because he was the first one to Navigate around the continent. But it is 2 different things. Latin americans is one thing, American (born in USA) is another, both are correct to say. I refer to myself as South American and I still think it sounds cool, so it is nothing to be ashamed of.
