i've always found, in both the creative fields and others that that hardcore drinkers are the ones with which i prefer to hangout. some are smart, some are thick but mostly they're the best fun.
unfortunately at some stage this changes as we get older. the hardcore drinkers become bores and mopey and downright sad. not sure where the tipping point is but i do know that i won't realise i past it until about a decade after.
