There is a visa (B1 I think, 6 months) you can get that allows you to telecommute (i.e. work for a UK company) whilst you are out there. You will need proof of this employment and a good reason to be in the states.
But if 3 months is ok, just got as a tourist (say you are going on a road trip) and work from your laptop in your apartment. I know plenty of people that have done this with no problems.
