All referrals and networking, especially through LinkedIn (I work with ad agencies but have one direct client). Always try to make the current project better than the last too. Working with ad agencies are cool because people jump from agency to agency all the time. Become known to an agency as the 'go-to-guy' and whenever someone jumps ship, it's always a possibility to be the go-to-guy for another agency. The cycle goes on and now you have a solid set of clients and probably even more work than you can handle. A lot of ad agencies pay very well too, so don't think you have to go direct to make serious coin.

Direct clients are cool but it'll be very difficult to get them and maintain them unless you're more than a one man show or know someone directly (I'm talking about big clients, i.e. Fortune 500 etc, not local companies).
