Since I started listening to this I've been wrestling this nagging sense that I've heard an identical piece of 'music' somewhere before.
The answer just struck me... the Voyager Interstellar Record has the following track on it.
What strikes me about this is that one is an ancient piece of traditional chinese folk music conveying the rhythm of life, and the other is a super-contemporary piece of data transcription conveying a rhythm of the NY Subway. They both sound remarkably similar.
