It's not about the money, it's about the symbolism and the implied-insult-to-capitalism factor..
Conservatives HATE NPR and PBS because, well, their very existence is because commercial radio SUCKS ASS and commercial television is unlikely to show stuff that PBS does... though PBS has gotten so much more careful over time... I used to call it the Petrolium Broadcasting Service after seeing all those sponsored by Atlantic Richfield/Shell/etc oil company titles....
But seriously, if PBS and NPR subsist on viewer/listener memberships, wouldn't that be an interesting nightmare for conservatives.... they'd much rather have them neutered by having to keep sponsors happy.. whether the sponsor was congress or a bunch of oil companies and big pharma companies...
