Having lived there many years myself, I would recommend the Inner Sunset. Waaaay better chance of finding a place where you can have a dog, and it's removed from the craziness that is downtown (including SoMa). Transportation is available via rail and bus, and if you're hip I hear the bike ride is the tits. There are neighborhoods and quick access to the Haight and Golden Gate Park. Cheers.
