The Firefox team has been really improving the browser on their latest versions, they set a goal of reducing memory leaks and optimizing the thing, it has improved a lot.
I use Safari because is the one that performs the best on my 5 year old iMac, Chrome was good on its earlier versions but has evolved into a cpu and memory hog (on this machine). Apple seems to get it right on this particular case, I think Chrome developers have so good computers they don't even test the thing on old computers.
