here's a "monster mash" type mix without using the song "monster mash"
    1. John Zacherle “Eighty-Two Tombstones” (Cameo) – JZ was a famous TV horror movie host in NYC and Philly and this, his 1958 lesser-known follow-up to his hit “Dinner With Drac,” is a ghostly killer backed by a shimmering surf band!
    2. Subsonics “Frankenstein” (Get Hip) – This Atlanta trio is not only one of the best and most underrated bands of the late 1990s/early 2000s, but also made a Halloween classic!
    3. The Idols “The Prowler” (RCA) – a killer I found at Rookie Ricardo’s that I know nothing about...
    4. The Jay-Hawks “The Creature (From Outer Space)” (Aladdin) – These prolific LA doo woppers are best known as the first band to record the classic “Stranded In The Jungle” and went on to become the stand-out r&b/soul band – the Vibrations.
    5. Nino Tempo with Pete Rugolo and His Orchestra “Jack The Ripper” (RCA) – a slick swinging post-Brecht/Weill beatnick exploitation ditty telling the story of London’s most debonair serial killing doctor
    6. Stella “Si vous connaissez quelque chose de pire qu’un vampire, parlez m’en toujours, ça pourra peut-être me faire sourire” (RCA) – this French teenager recorded a number of killer songs before later joining Magma – this entire EP is supreme – particularly this vampire track!
    7. The Revillos “She’s Fallen In Love With A Monster Man” (Superville) – this later version of the Rezillo’s recorded this ecstatic 1981 take on the Screaming Lord Sutch classic
    8. Round Robin “I’m The Wolf Man” (Domain Records) – “the roundest of them all,” famous for a number of top notch r&b, twist, and soul numbers also made this killer fuzzed-out garage stomper
    9. The Castle Kings “You Can Get Him Frankenstein” (Atlantic) – during his brief tenor at Atlantic Records in 1961, Phil Spector co-wrote this Halloween novelty rocker with bossman Ahmet Ertegun (and Adlum?)
    10. Lee “The Big Masher” Lilly “Big Masher” (Alcor) – I just picked this one up from Billy of Norton Records at the WFMU Record Fair for its “Spooky Movies” B-Side but found this wild post-Monster Mash twister on the flip!
    11. The Fiends “The Addams Family (Thank You Thing)” (G.N.P Crescendo) – Sonny Bono gets the producer/arranger credit on this danceable cover of the “Adams Family” theme
    12. Gene Moss “I Want to Bite Your Hand” (RCA) – I’d like to apologize in advance for this Beatles cover – I couldn’t help it
    13. Jack O’Fire “Jack the Ripper” (Solid Sex Lovedoll Records) – Tim Kerr, Walter Daniels, Dean Gunderson, and Josh from D.C. had this killer lo-fi early 1990s blues punk band in Austin, TX that, in addition to covering everything from Joy Division, Wire, and Negative Approach, did this pounding Screaming Lord Sutch cover...
    14. Glenn and Christy “Wombat Twist” (Sonic) – I’ve been looking for this on 45 ever since I first heard it on a Mr. Manicotti compilation and finally found one from Telstar Records’ own Todd-O-Phonic Todd last week!
    15. Dean Hawley “The Mummy’s Bracelet” (Valor) – this is a more obscure version of the already unknown Lee Ross version – the ballad of a thief who steals a mummy’s bracelet from the museum and gives it to his lover... And the mummy comes back for what’s rightfully his!
    16. The Frantics “Werewolf” (Dolton) – one of my favorites I learned as a kid as “The Fourth Dimension” on “The Ventures In Space” album, this original kicks the already masterful Ventures version’s ass and has a werewolf on it to boot! I can’t really think of anything better!
    17. The Pearls “Ugly Face” (On the Square) – a couple of years ago Howie Pyro sold me this almost klezmer-ish minor key r&b jam from this 1950s Detroit combo that featured a young Derek Martin
    18. Gene “Bowlegs” Miller “Frankenstein Walk” (Hi) – a Soul Clap favorite by a prolific 1960s Memphis studio musician who stepped up front for this fun(ky) riot!
    19. The Count “Counting to Ten” (Sesame Street) – my personal favorite Sesame Street character’s joy for the simple things in life like counting can be contagious
    20. Erazerhead “Werewolf” (Flicknife) – these English punks had a Ramonesy melodicism combined with a grandiose Damned horror sensibility – I guess that equals the Misfits – but not quite. I picked this up at Sean Ragon’s new Heaven Street Records in Greenpoint.
    21. The Id “The Rake” (RCA) – I never knew what to do with this super-early graveyard psych record until now!
    22. Charles Sheffield “It’s Your Voodoo Working” (Excello) - another killer-diller from a super-consistent period of this top-notch Louisiana label... and voodoo-themed!
    23. Johnny Eager “The Howl” (Design) – This is another one I just picked up from Norton – I know absolutely nothing about the obscure artist or song except that it was on a division of Pickwick, the label best remembered as the company where a young Lou Reed got his start as a songwriter
    24. Calypso Carnival featuring King Flash “Zombie Jamboree (Back to Back)” (Columbia) – the zombies are back to back/belly to belly at this Halloween dance party in a New York cemetery in this picturesque 1950s calypso exploitation number. At Motor City a regular told me this was her uncle’s favorite song.
    25. Koko Taylor and Willie Dixon “Insane Asylum” (Chess) – one of my all-time favorites since high-school – a man’s wife loses her mind and get’s committed to the mental hospital – kinda like “Betty Blue” set to music – this is one of the most powerful performances I’ve ever heard on tape – check out the sublime harmonies – evil is going on!
    26. Lee Kristofferson “Night of the Werewolf” (Thrust) – this 1977 instrumental b-side to a cover of “Dinner With Drac” could’ve almost jumped off the grooves “Psychedelic Jungle”
    27. The Scientists “You Only Live Twice” (Karbon) – I know, not necessarily a Halloween song except by context, but here, Australia’s gloomiest do a killer take of this Lee Hazlewood-penned “James Bond” theme that is the ideal closer to this set...
