  i'm represented by an agent which does help, specially with negotiating bigger jobs and getting your work in front of the right people. having said that there are many great illustrator out there who are not represented and get loads of work. doing self initiated work/projects and posting them online (website,blogs,flickr,tumblr... definitely helps catch the eye of potential clients.
