The thing that scares me the most, especially in a big city like Chicago, is how quickly supplies would be gone if shit really hit the fan from some kind of disaster or terrorist attack. If people really felt like they were in trouble, all the Walgreens, CVS's, grocery stores would run dry really quickly. I don't doubt that you'd have violence on a large scale from people trying to ensure they have what they need/want.

The worst fear is a shortage of water. If the plumbing were to be cut off to a large area, that would be a huge problem. Water is unfortunately something you can't keep on you in large quantities, so if you were fleeing an area you'd have to be pretty conservative with whatever water you could keep with you.

The other thing I think about is shelter, especially the ability of a shelter to conceal you from being found. My wife and I have always said that we'd "evacuate" to her dad's small farm about a 1 1/2 hour drive from here. If we couldn't drive there, we'd probably be on foot for multiple days, walking northwest along the highway. I always think about the best way to stay hidden at night, keep to ourselves, keep clear of thieves and such.

The chance of that ever happening is pretty slim, but it's worth daydreaming about sometimes. I have little faith that the majority of humanity would get along in a serious, life changing crisis.
