  speculation with possible spoilers below, so just ignore me if you'd like:

  marty telling the detectives "if you talked to rust, he was getting a read on you, you weren't getting a read on him" is pretty telling - especially considering the end of episode 5, i would imagine cohle's been using his time off the grid to research / hunt who he believes to be responsible for the murders (up to and including the detectives who are interviewing him in 2012, hence calling them "company men"). i doubt very much at this point cohle will turn up to be the killer, but you never know.
