On Monday, famed physicist Stephen Hawking and Russian tycoon Yuri Milner held a news conference in London to announce their new project: injecting $100 million and a whole lot of brain power into the search for intelligent extraterrestrial life, an endeavor they're calling Breakthrough Listen.

"We believe that life arose spontaneously on Earth," Hawking said at Monday's news conference, "So in an infinite universe, there must be other occurrences of life."

    • My main takeaway here is that Hawking thinks the universe is infinite. Interesting.detritus
    • smoking the hasheesh. does it appear spontaneous? how do you measure spontaneous?yurimon
    • how did the creator appear then? was it not spontaneous? or did someone else intelligently design the creator as well?_niko
    • ^ the creator isn't created, he (sexist) just is.fadein11
    • Which begs the question of why the universe couldn't "just be" on its own. Without any kind of intelligent creator.yuekit
    • as above so below. our bodies are said to be the universe within in the as above so below. so the process is as follows. we are in the mind of the creator justyurimon
    • you dream of something it exist as thought and you can create it from thought.yurimon
    • I think it's more like reading human qualities into everything...which is easy to understand from a psychological point of viewyuekit
    • A humanlike mind is the only thing we know so we project that onto the creation of the universe when in fact it doesn't make much sense.yuekit
    • we function in nature. we have properties of the universe within us. so whats to say the process is any different if we are to be a reflection of the larger.yurimon
    • "you dream of something it exist as thought and you can create it from thought." ...you mean spontaneouslyscarabin
