i drove a 5 ton dump truck for a little over a year and a half before i quit due to the owner dicking around with my money. He thought it was ok to pay me late constantly, and i am talking weeks late every time. the main difference is the constant down shifting when in traffic, you can't just hit the brakes. also, no rearview mirror means you have to learn how big the truck is by feel, all you have are side mirrors and the round spot mirrors. the acceleration is shit, so people are always trying to cut you off, they don't realize that you have a shit ton of momentum and can't just hit the brakes. also, the drivers seat makes all the difference in the world, after driving a cab-over truck for hours, which means the wheels are right below where you sit, you feel every little bump and your ass will be very unhappy if you have a shitty seat. 16 wheeler seats tend to be air ride and not cab-over layout so they are a little better but i remember when i was in europe i saw a good deal of cab-over semi tractor trailers and that would be hellish to drive all day. i have heard from my uncle who used to drive a semi that when you have an empty trailer the wind can be scary as fuck as the trailer acts as a big sail with no weight in it which sounds quite unpleasant. otherwise, the obvious stuff, like having to take stupidly wide turns and city driving being extremely nerve racking for the first six months. what's this all about anyways, why the fascination
